| It is the aim of the Amber Road project to revive the old trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. For millennia, this corridor has linked Northern and Southern Europe, and today passes through some of the most important European tourist destinations. The Amber Road runs through eleven countries on its way from Russia to Italy. It is an ideal symbol for the common European heritage, since (almost) all countries along its path are making efforts to reanimate it. In Lower Austria, the Austrian Amber Road Association started in 2001 with the realisation of this idea. It is working in close partnership with other organisations like the Roman Amber Road Preservation Association of the Burgenland and the Baltic Amber Road. In accordance with the INTERREG III B projects R.O.M.E, we are working on bundling all these initiatives in order to make the revitalisation of this network of destinations, stretching from St. Petersburg to Venice, a reality.
