The Order of the Teutonic Knights was established in 1198 AD during the Third Crusade as a brotherhood for nursing wounded soldiers. They named themselves "The Lords of Amber" and dominated the Baltic region for centuries. The Order of the Teutonic Knights was also present in the eastern parts of Austria and still is today: in 1290, the well-fortified chapel "Maria am Bühel" in Palterndorf was given to the Teutonic Knights by Leutold von Kuenring, and until today, the parish is under the supervision of the Order. The relief on the north side of the Plague column of Palterndorf shows a man and a woman in the traditional dress of medieval times. |
